OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL. FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER 2013. THEME : OBEYING WITHOUT QUESTIONING

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL. FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER 2013. THEME : OBEYING WITHOUT QUESTIONING

MEMORISE : But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you. Jeremiah 7 : 23.
READ : 1 KINGS 17 : 1 – 5.
1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LordGod of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
5 So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : 2 SAMUEL 9 – 12.
God is a good and wonderful God but He is not a democrat. Democracy has its benefits but in God’s Kingdom, it has several limitations, hence God adopts a theocratic style of government. If you would be God’s favourite, you must learn to obey Him unquestionably. In 1 Kings 17 : 1 – 16, after Elijah announced the seizure of rain, God told him to go to Brook Cherith and that birds will feed him there. He went without asking any questions. If God tells you to go and preach at a particular location you hate to go, would you pretend as if it was the devil that spoke to you? Or would you ask: ‘Father, why me, why not somebody else?’ When the water at Brook Cherith dried up, and God said, ‘Go and meet the widow’, he did not question but simply obeyed.
Some people have become so learned, enlightened and refined to the point that they query God. They summon God to explain why He wants them to do what He asked them to, or else, they will not obey. If you taste what it means to be a divine favourite for one month, you will do almost anything just to remain His favourite.
Moreover, anyone who wants to be God’s favourite must be ready to spend quality time with Him. A couple who after marriage hardly spend time together, will after several years not be able to show the fruit of their union. The fruit of the Spirit is developed as you spend time in God’s presence, right in the midst of contrary circumstances. So also are the gifts of the Holy Spirit. If you want to heal the sick or raise the dead, first go and stay in His presence. There is hardly anyone who walked in the miraculous by the power of the Holy Spirit without being incubated by the Holy Spirit. Do you really want to be His favourite? Even if you are not presently His favourite, you can work your way into being one by the things you do from today. As you pay the price, the Lord will make you His favourite.
KEY POINT :
Obeying without questioning is the height of trust, while questioning before obedience is the height of mistrust.

yinkson's blog

yinkson's blog
Making money with a website not only requires very little initial investment, but depending on what you want to focus on, it can be an extremely profitable venture as well. From affiliate marketing to blogging to actually selling your own products or even just running advertising on your site. Even beginners with little or no experience can make money with a website if they just follow a few simple guidelines. Building a website is also a lot easier than most people think. Gone are the days when you needed to understand html code, or be a design guru. There are now simple push button scripts available that let you set up a professional looking website or blog in just minutes. There are also hundreds of great tutorials available online that will show you step by step. 1)Affiliate marketing can be a great way to get started with making money online. With your own website, you can see where your audience is coming from and directly test new strategies to encourage new potential customers to come and buy a product that you’re marketing. Affiliate marketing is when you market someone else’s product and receive a percentage of commissions in return for directing customers to that site. Depending on your niche, this can be quite lucrative. It will require some research to determine the best topics to work on, but regardless, it can be easy to leave links in your articles or even go so far as to have your own online store of goods you are affiliated with. 2) Blogging is another easy way to make money with a website, because once you’re established, that opens up many more opportunities to dip into other income streams. Given the propensity of other blogs out there today, it’s imperative to create a unique angle that will attract readers and eventually, advertisers. Top bloggers earn thousands per month from advertisers paying them to leave ads on their blogs for their millions of readers to potentially click on. Advertisers like this because they have a targeted audience already assembled for them; they just need a mechanism to get the traffic to their site. 3) Simple content sites that offer visitors information about a particular subject they are searching for. Then once you get the traffic coming to your site, you can monetize it by either promoting affiliate programs or by placing ads on your site. Then every time someone clicks on one of the ads on your site, you get a paid for it. Then you just have to work on producing good quality content which will attract more and more traffic. More Traffic = More Clicks = More Money. 4) Selling products through a website can also make you a healthy profit, because this gives you access to an entire network of internet users all over the world, not just customers who live in your area. You can sell either physical or Info-products. Info- products are easy and cost very little to make and it doesn’t take much effort to market them if your audience is there and possibly willing to purchase them. Selling info-products means you are providing specialized information to a privileged group of people willing to pay for access to this information. This can be in the form of e-books, newsletters, or reports. All you need is a website, a quality product, and great advertising copy that will have customers lining up to buy. Whichever way you choose to make money out of your website it’s easy that is why some of the most successful people and companies in the world are building their own websites. Are you ready to get started making money today? Send Email to tunji.mos@gmail.com.for FREE e- books on 21 easy ways to make money in Nigeria today

Wenger: 'We feel sorry and disappointed'

Wenger: 'We feel sorry and disappointed'Dear Arsenal supporter,It was a big disappointment to lose the game on Saturday. We started the game well and then suddenly everything went against us so it is a big blow. Not only did we lose the game but we have a few injuries and many kicks. However, we had some lively moments and kept going until the end and that's what we have to focus on and forget the referee. Even when we had 10 men we had chances to come back to 2-2. We were all very disappointed. We want our fans to be happy. When you don't achieve that, you feel absolutely sorry and really disappointed. In terms of transfers, we were on the market before the game and we are on the market after the game. But I have to look at the solution at the start of the game. Could we have won the game with the players we have? I say yes. We take our work seriously and believe me, we analyse every single player in the world. We work 24 hours a day for that. When we make decisions, we take it seriously. People try to think we do not want to spend. We want to. We are ready to buy players. The team are now focused on Wednesday night and getting a positive result against Fenerbahce in Istanbul. It is a crucial match of course, and we will give everything we can to succeed there. Thanks for your support

MOSQUITOES FINDS SOME PEOPLE MORE DELICIOUS THAN OTHERS

Mosquito season is in full swing. A lucky few people seem immune to the bites of the pesky insects. Others can’t seem to avoid them.New research explains mosquitoes’ apparent selectivity. According to an article in Smithsonian magazine, an estimated 20 percent of people are “especially delicious” to mosquitoes. (Shudder.) They are bitten more often than others. Why? A number of factors are at play. Chief among them is blood type. “Not surprisingly — since, after all, mosquitoes bite us to harvest proteins from our blood — research shows that they find certain blood types more appetising than others,” the article reports. Type O is at the top of the list. Additionally, about 85 percent of people secrete a chemical signal that indicates their blood type; these “secretors” are more prone to bites regardless of their blood type. Another factor is the amount of carbon dioxide people emit when they breathe. Larger people exhale more of the gas, which may explain why adults tend to get bitten more often than children. This also means that obese people are more prone to getting bitten than average or underweight people, tall people more prone than short. Sweat, high body temperatures and skin bacteria also play a role. Pregnancy, which increases body temperature and carbon dioxide emission, may also increase the likelihood of bites. And if you’re drinking type, you may have made yourself a mosquito target. No one has been able to pinpoint why drinking beer makes people more attractive to mosquitoes. Some have theorised that the elevation in body temperature and the amount of ethanol in sweat may play a role, but neither theory has panned out.Can mosquito bites be reduced?Folks often ask whether they should befriend someone who is more -- or less -- attractive (to mosquitoes). The notion is that sitting next to a person who is more mosquito-attractive will somehow protect you by diverting mosquitoes from you to him/her. Genius, but the two of you together may draw in even more mosquitoes, and you may suffer even more bites than if you were a lone soul on the park bench. Ah, but what about sitting next to a mosquito-repellent person? That still may not benefit you. Certain emanations of that person may draw in mosquitoes from afar, but they then might home in on you once they were close. With all this said, there is the concept of zooprophylaxis. Maintaining chickens, goats, or other animals in your home can, in some cases, divert bites by mosquitoes that would otherwise have been directed to a person. This can afford some limited protection against malaria and other mosquito-borne infections. Whereas this may offer a strategy for folks who live in primitive dwellings in rural regions and don't have resources to protect themselves by way of improved housing, pesticides, etc, it would not likely be embraced by travellers. Imagine checking in your hotel and finding a complimentary chicken in the room. Ah, but if it was a rooster, you'd not need to set the alarm clock.

Mercedes Benz Releases Details On 9G Tronic Nine Speed Auto

Following the recent news that the E-Class, at least in Europe, is now available with a nine-speed automatic transmission, Mercedes-Benz has released the full details on its latest cog-swapper and confirmed that it will be available in most of its models in the coming years. Currently, the new transmission, which is called the 9G-TRONIC, is available exclusively in the E350 BlueTEC sedan and wagon. Mercedes says it can be fitted to rear- and all-wheel-drive cars, and that it also works with hybrid and plug-in hybrid applications. The higher number of gears and the broader gear ratio spread (9.15 for gears one to nine) help to increase smoothness but more importantly boost efficiency. This is achieved primarily through reduced revs. For example, in the E350 BlueTEC, whose 3.0-liter turbodiesel develops 248 horsepower, cruising at 75 mph in ninth gear sees the engine ticking over at just 1,350 rpm. The car is also good for 0-62 mph acceleration in just 6.6 seconds and fuel economy of 36.75 mpg in the city cycle, up from 34 mpg with the previous 7G-TRONIC seven-speed transmission. The highway figure remains unchanged at 50 mpg. Note, European figures are listed. An engine stop-start system is also included to maximize efficiency. But the transmission also comes with a manual mode that’s said to deliver crisp changes when you want a bit of spirited driving. The speed at which it changes gears is due to a direct control system that enables short, barely perceptible gear changes, and it’s also possible for several gears to be jumped when accelerating or decelerating. Another advantage of the transmission is its lightweight construction. Despite two additional gears and a maximum transferable torque of up to 737 pound-feet, the 9G-TRONIC transmission requires as little installation space as its seven-speed predecessor and, in addition, is lighter. Another goal was to implement the nine gears with the lowest number of planetary gear sets and shift elements as possible. Four simple planetary gear sets and six shift elements are used and work together with three speed sensors. As previously reported, numerous other automakers are looking to additional gear ratios to eke out further savings in fuel consumption. ZF has already announced a nine-speed automatic, which will debut in the Range Rover Evoque this year and eventually appear in some Chrysler products, and Ford and General Motors have announced plans to develop new nine- and ten-speed automatic transmissions together. On the smartphone side, the company will be bringing the latest Jelly Bean version to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra. IMPORTANT SECURITY TIPS...

Security Tips - ATM Security Pick a Safe Location • Use only ATMs in well-lighted, high-traffic areas.  • ATMs inside supermarkets or shopping malls are considered safer. • Don't use ATMs that are remote or hidden such as being located behind buildings, behind pillars, walls, or away from public view. • Beware of obvious hiding places like shrubbery or overgrown trees.  • Get a list of ATM locations from your bank and keep it in your car. So, if the first one you come across does not appear safe, you have a list of alternative sites.  • A Limit your use of ATMS to daylight hours as much as possible.  When you drive up to an ATM location, scan the area for any suspicious persons. If you see anyone suspicious that is standing nearby or sitting alone in a car, drive away.  • When you approach an ATM on foot be prepared and have your ATM card ready. Memorize your personal PIN number to prevent loss and speed the transaction.  • After inserting your card and your PIN number keep an eye out behind you. • Never accept an offer to help or request for help from a suspicious male at the machine. Be Alert  When you receive cash from the machine put it away immediately, extract your card, and walk away. • If you are confronted by an armed robber, give up your money without argument. The cash is not worth serious injury or death. Courtesy of the LAGOS STATE SECURITY TRUST FUND

UPDATES ON ASUU STRIKE

Lecturers’ meeting with lawmakers, ministers deadlocked Premium Times Published:July 15,2013 The lecturers insist government must implement hundred per cent the agreement it reached with them in 2009. The meeting between striking university lecturers’ and federal legislators was deadlocked on Monday. The meeting, held at the National Assembly Complex, failed to resolve the contending issues. The meeting was initially delayed reportedly due to the late arrival of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim. The lecturers, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, were said to have insisted on a 100 per cent implementation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government; while the lawmakers and government officials present requested partial implementation. ASUU has been on strike for almost two weeks, paralyzing academic activities at all Nigeria’s public universities. At the Monday meeting, ASUU insisted that the Federal Government should implement the agreements reached in 2009 before it would call off its strike. Some of the issues in contention include: funding, university autonomy, academic freedom, earned academic allowance and registration of Universities Pension Management Company. Others are: amendment of pension retirement age of academics at the professional cadre, federal assistance to state universities and transfer of Federal Government landed property to universities. ASUU President, Dr Nasir Fagge, told the committee that only two out of the nine agreements had been met. “We cannot renegotiate what was already agreed in 2009, so the best thing is, let government go and implement the aspects of the agreement as they have proposed to us themselves. “Once that is done, I am confident that it will engender confidence among our members and our members nationwide will be able to review the situation at any moment and take appropriate decision.’’ Dr. Fagge expressed worry that the Federal Government was not fair in its dealing with the association. He decried the situation whereby funds were being pumped into other sectors such as banking, aviation and textile industry that had challenges, yet education was continuously neglected. “If we really want to turn around the country, we must address the issue of education because it is the bedrock of development,” he said. “I believe that one of the ways of addressing some of these issues is for government to implement the 2009 agreement as this will place education on a sound footing.’’ He noted that Nigerian students and lecturers were continuously leaving the country to neighbouring countries in search of better education and teaching conditions. Speaking on the issue, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, told the committee that the Federal Government was working tirelessly to ensure that it met its own side of the agreement. Mrs. Rufai said the implementation of the agreement was not something that could be completed within a short period as it required a very long and tedious process. “Two of the issues have been implemented up to 100 per cent and the other issues too, progress has been made as there has been an increase in funding.’’ Also speaking, Prof. Julius Okogie, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), told the committee that the tuition paid in universities in Nigeria was very low compared to other countries. Mr. Okogie appealed to ASUU to call off the strike since negotiations were already on. Some members of the committee including Senator Oluremi Tinubu (ACN-Lagos) and Rep. Farouk Lawan (PDP-Kano), also appealed to ASUU to soften its stand and call off the strike in the interest of the students. The committee later went into a closed session with the stakeholders, but there are no indications that an agreement was reached.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday walked out on senators, House of Representatives members, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayat Rufai and her Labour counterpart, Emeka Wogu. ASUU members, who are on an indefinite strike over a face-off with the Federal Government, staged the walkout during a meeting called by the National Assembly Joint Committee on Education to find a lasting solution to the crisis. This is as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, yesterday agreed to suspend its sevenweek old strike. The Joint Education Committee had invited both ASUU and ASUP to a meeting in order to find a way out of the strike embarked on by both unions. The committee also invited Rufai and Wogu to the parley. However, while the meeting between ASUP and the two ministers were still ongoing, representatives of ASUU, who were asked to wait for their turn, walked out of the premises of the National Assembly to protest what they described as undue delay and waste of their time. The representatives of the ASUU left the National Assembly Complex in annoyance, saying they were slighted. One of the members, who declined to give his name, told newsmen that they had another appointment to attend. Another said, “asking us to excuse them is a slight; why should they ask us to excuse them; what is it that they want to discuss that we cannot be part of.” The lawmakers, who were oblivious of the action of the university lecturers, were astounded when they were briefed later. Also, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, who chaired the joint sitting, expressed anger over the action. He, however, fixed another day for the meeting with ASUU officials. Chukwumerije said that the committee would intensify its negotiation with the government to ensure that the issues at stake were resolved. “All we are urging is that you call an emergency meeting with 24 hours because the students are getting restive. We need to understand that if these students go out of hand, it will cause more problems for the country. “Please trust us to keep to this two weeks we have given you to try and implement your demands,” he said. Senator Sunny Ugbuoji (PDP-Ebonyi) said it was unacceptable for ASUU to walk out on the committee as this showed a disregard for the entire parliament. “ASUU has walked out on us and this should be said in plain terms. What meeting can be more important than this meeting?” Ugbuoji asked. Reacting to the development a member of the committee, Hon. Farouk Lawan, described ASUU members’ action as academic arrogance. Lawan said ASUU should have been patient and waited to hear from the members and the ministers, noting that no other meeting could be more important. He urged the committee chairmen not to relent in rescheduling another meeting with ASUU in the interest of the students who were still at home. He described the “snub” by the ASUU representatives as not expected of university lecturers. During the meeting with polytechnic lecturers, the Joint Committee on Education was able to resolve the issue as the National President of ASUP, Dr. Chibuzor Asomugha, said his members would do everything possible to call off the strike soon. He said: “We will try everything within our ambit to do the biddings of the National Assembly on the need for us to call off the strike soonest.”

SAMUEL LADOKE AKINTOLA (SLA): A TEACHER, LAWYER, POLITICIAN, ARISTOCRAT AND ORATOR

Like many other African nationalists Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola (born July 6 1910 in Ogbomosho, south west Nigeria) was a politician and was renowned for his great oratory skills. Chief Akintola was a teacher in the 1930s and early 1940s. He left teaching to study public administration and law in England and returned to Nigeria in 1949. Upon his return, he teamed up with other educated Nigerians from the Western Region to form the Action Group (AG). He became the AG party legal adviser and by 1954 was deputy leader under Chief Obafemi Awolowo. As the deputy leader of the AG party, he did not serve in the regional Western Region Government headed by the premier Chief Awolowo but was the Action Group Parliamentary Leader in the House of Representatives of Nigeria. At the federal level he served as Minister for Health and later Minister for Communications and Aviation. In addition to serving as one of the founding fathers of modern Nigeria, he also held the highly revered title of Oloye Aare Ona Kakanfo XIII (the supreme military commander/Generalissimo) of Yoruba land. In preparation for Nigeria's independence, scheduled for 1960, the Action Group party took a decision that affected the career of Chief Ladoke Akintola, the party, and Nigeria when the party in late 1959 asked him to swap political positions with Chief Obafemi Awolowo by becoming the Premier of the Western Region while the latter (who also was the national leader of the Action Group) became the party leader in the Federal Parliament. As a result of the 1959 elections to parliament, the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) from the Northern Region of Nigeria became the country's leading political party with 134 seats out of the 312 seats in the Parliament. National Council of Nigeria and Cameroun (NCNC) based in the Eastern Region of Nigeria obtained 89 seats in the same election. In the West, the Action Group (AG) elected 73 members to the parliament in 1959. The NPC and NCNC (Chief Nnamdi Azikwe's party) coalesced to form the first government of the newly independent Nigeria. Many of the standard biographies of Nigerian leaders and journalistic accounts have never minced words that Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola were close allies and promoters of the Action Group (AG). However, the leadership of the Action Group (AG), which formed the official opposition in the federal parliament, split in May 1962 as a result of a rift between the party’s leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his erstwhile deputy and Premier of Western Nigeria, Chief Ladoke Akintola. Various historical accounts abound on the circumstances that led to the rift between the two political leaders. While some historians claimed that the genesis of the political crisis in Western Nigeria began with the sacking of Chief J.F Odunjo as the Chairman, Western Region Marketing Board by Chief Akintola over inter-family squabbles, others attributed the offshoot of the crisis to hard line stance of the AG leaders over differences that could have been amicably resolved within the party. According to a publication of The Human Rights Law Service (HURILAWS) “Managing Election Conflicts in Nigeria”, the AG crisis of 1962 arose primarily from disagreement over matters of ideology between Chief Awolowo, the party’s leader and Chief S.L Akintola, his deputy. Decisions over the direction of strategic alliances by the party, the adoption of democratic socialism as the party's platform and the battle for supremacy in the party led to disagreement between Chiefs Akintola and Awolowo. Chief Akintola disagreed with Chief Awolowo's decision not to join the coalition government. Chief Akintola felt the Yoruba people of the West were losing their pre-eminent position in business, university and administration in Nigeria to the Igbo people of the East simply because the Igbo-controlled NCNC had joined the government and the AG had not. He also opposed the party's decision to adopt democratic socialism as its ideology, preferring a more conservative stance. He called for better relations with the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) and an all party federal coalition that would remove the AG from opposition and give its leaders greater access to power. Moreover, Chief Akintola was accused by Chief Awolowo of trying to supplant him as Leader of the party. In May 1962 the Western House of Assembly was set to remove Chief Akintola after the party had earlier passed a vote of no confidence on the premier in a party meeting, crisis erupted on the floor of the house. The majority expelled Chief Akintola from the party. The then Governor of the Western Region, the Ooni of Ife, Sir Adesoji Aderemi demanded Chief Akintola’s resignation as Premier and named Alhaji Dauda Adegbenro as his successor. Crisis erupted in the Western Nigeria and this earned the region the appellation "Wild Wild West". The AG party broke into two factions leading to several crises in the Western Region House of Assembly that led the central/federal government, headed by the Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa to declare State of Emergency rule in the Western region and Chief (Dr.) M.A Majekodunmi, the Federal Minister of Health was appointed as Administrator. This action resulted in some legal battles as Chief Akintola challenged his removal as the Premier of the region. The series of cases became popularly known and cited as Akintola-vs- Aderemi & Adegbenro (1962) 1 All. NLR. 442, Adegbenro –vs- Akintola & Aderemi (1962) 1 All NLR 465 and Adegbenro-vs- Akintola (1963) All NLR 305. In Adegbenro- vs- Akintola in May 1962, for instance, the issue tried by the court was the removal of Chief Akintola as the Premier of Western Nigeria. Eventually Chief Akintola was restored to power (even though he had lost the legal battle with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council then Nigeria's highest tribunal) as Premier in 1963. In the general election of 1965, Chief Akintola won his position as Premier, not as member of the AG party, but as the leader of a newly formed party called Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), which pursued a policy of collaboration with the Northern People's Congress (NPC) as NIGERIAN NATIONAL ALLIANCE (NNA) and National Council of Nigeria and Cameroun (NCNC) government in the federal parliament and government. Chief Akintola was responsible for completing the founding of University of Ife (Chief Awolowo's brainchild and currently Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1962 while still a premier in Western Region. He was also involved in development of Premier Hotel and other monuments. Along with many other leading politicians, mostly members of the Northern People's Congress (NPC). Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola (SLA) was assassinated in Ibadan, the capital of Western Region, on the day of Nigeria's first military coup of 15 January 1966 which terminated the First Republic. This was the "Young Majors Coup" or the "coup of the January boys" led primarily by Igbo Majors including Major K.C. Nzeogwu Major Ifeajuna, who were backed by a combination of officers and junior officers. By: Ayo Arannilewa

Internet-enabled Pillow Connects Long-Distance Lovers

Romance can be complicated, especially for couples in long-distance relationships. There are many different technological ways lovers can stay connected, but sometimes Skype or Facetime just don't cut it. Enter the internet-enabled pillow. Joanna Montgomery, 25, of Newcastle, UK, set out to develop a new product that would connect couples who are physically apart. Pillow Talk enables couples to feel closer by transmitting their heartbeats - and by lighting their pillows with a glow. While they may be hundreds of kilometres apart, the two partners are connected through a wristband and a smartphone app. The wristband picks up the wearer’s heartbeat and transmits it via Bluetooth to the iOS or Android app. The other wearer immediately receives, and hears, the other's heartbeat. "By plugging in your headphones or the pillow speaker, you can lie in bed and hear the real-time heartbeat of your loved one," Montgomery says. The Internet-enabled pillows also glow in the dark. When one person puts their head down on their pillow, it sends a signal over the internet to light up the other person's pillow. The result, Montgomery adds, is an intimate interaction between two lovers. 'Sense of presence' Pillow Talk is currently in beta testing and due to be launched later this year. But it's already received hundreds of orders. After being featured on design and technology blog Gizmodo last year, the project went viral. Since then, it has received 750,000+ views on YouTube, according to Montgomery, who founded the design company Little Riot after creating Pillow Talk. "I'm still amazed at the success of it," Montgomery says. "I seem to have somehow struck an emotional chord with people. When people email me they don't just say, 'Can I order one?' They email me about their boyfriend or girlfriend and how they met... they send pictures of themselves." Her inspiration derived from her digital interaction design degree at Dundee University in Scotland and personal experience with her own boyfriend, who works away every four weeks on a ship in the North Sea. "If you text or email someone you have to sit at your computer or with your phone and it doesn't seem natural. When you’re in a relationship with someone you're sitting with them in the same room - not necessarily talking - but still with them. There wasn’t any technology out there that offered that experience." Pillow Talk offers a sense of presence, she says. "You don’t have to actively engage with it but you still have a sense that your partner is there." http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/ story/2013/07/02/pillow-talk.html http://blevopedia.blogspot.in/2013/07/internet- enabled-pillow-connects-long.html

Retired Zoo keeper Eaten by Wild cats...

Mauro Lagiard, 72, was attacked from behind while his wife Carla, 73, could only watch from outside the enclosure as the animals dragged his body into a clearing A retired zookeeper was torn to pieces and eaten by at least three of his tigers as he tried to feed them. Mauro Lagiard, 72, was attacked from behind while his wife Carla, 73, could only watch from outside the enclosure. The beasts dragged Mr Lagiard’s lifeless body 100 feet into a clearing. Alpha-male Samir started the horrific mauling as the pensioner tried to feed the tigers chicken meatballs on Tuesday night. Two others joined in while five cubs watched from the sidelines. It took paramedics half an hour to get close to his dismembered body. Mr Lagiard was devoted to Samir even though he also attacked him two years ago. He was in hospital for eight months. Yesterday his wife still refused to blame the tigers. She said: “My husband and Samir did not get on. If I had gone it would never have happened.” But neighbours said the animals were only fed twice a week and had become aggressive. The couple had always been big cat lovers and originally kept tigers and leopards at a villa outside Turin, Italy. But neighbours complained and the cats were moved to the Martinat Oasis animal sanctuary. The couple continued to look after the beasts, living in a camper van nearby, after it shut in 2010. A keeper who had worked there with the couple said Mr Lagiard was very sure of himself. He said: “He never took any precautions. He went in, he gave them their food and he left. He had no fear, even though in the past he had been attacked by the tigers.” The cats are currently in the care of vets while their fate is decided. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/retired- zookeeper-eaten-tigers-tried-2022687

ASUU STRIKE UPDATE: THE REAL CAUSE OF ASUU JULY STRIKE...

ASUU STRIKE : The Real Cause of Asuu July Strike Asuu Report reaching MyeduNigeria From Saharareport had it that the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, between 29th and 30th June 2013, a number of issues were raised on developments affecting the country’s education system and the Nigerian nation as a whole. These include the lingering crisis at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), the continued violation of the rights of the re-engaged 49 academics at the University of Ilorin, and the non-release of the White Paper on Special Visitation to the University of Abuja. Others include the parlous state of the economy, and Government’s disregard for its Agreements with our Union. The Nigerian Educational Logjam Gentlemen of the Press, the crisis affecting the Nigerian education sector stems largely from the failure of the Nigerian governments, over the years, to boldly address the suffocating challenges, which have stymied the development of the sector. It seems that while the Government is fully aware of the enormity of the infrastructural, personnel and other forms of decay at all levels, it does not have the courage to tackle these challenges for the good of the nation. This attitude on the part of Government has given critics the impression that perhaps Government is more comfortable with the uneducated class than it is with the educated one. To compound this problem, the impression is often given that we are not in control of our educational policies as external and other influences have tended to show a national inclination to a weakened intellectual class which in turn prognosticates a desire for an ideologically barren, colonially dependent and financially deprived structure that is not primed for the growth and development of the system. ASUU challenges the Federal and State Governments, and other stakeholders who have responsibility for the education of the Nigerian people, to show great courage in implementing decisions, policies and agreements produced over time so as to put Nigerian education back on the fast lane. This should lead to the liberation of the Nigerian education system from the cloud of despair and despondency. Gentlemen of the Press, you will recall that ASUU recently issued a Press Release over the untimely death of some Students’ Union leaders who were on their way to the University of Uyo. We used the opportunity to call for the common struggle to enthrone democratic governance in our tertiary institutions, with full respect for the rights of students to unionize. While this must be invigorated, we wish to note the unfortunate situation on our campuses today wherein most Students’ Union leaders, especially at the level of NANS, are possible drop-outs, government agents, Youth Corp members, and other questionable characters being foisted on genuine undergraduates in our universities by politicians and other officials of the State. As a Union with a stake in the future of our youth and our nation, ASUU shall use her networks to monitor and identify the true status of those who currently parade themselves as student leaders nation-wide. We are determined to indigenize student unionism on our campuses. This is the only way the Students’ Union Movement can genuinely engage issues of noncommercial education with access to all; allocation of at least 26% of yearly budgets to education; declaration of emergency on the whole education system, revitalization of University system, etc. The Crisis at RSUST Gentlemen of the Press, you will recall that the crisis at River State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, has become a recurring decimal at our interactions with the media since August 2012 because it is an issue that is very close to our hearts. We remain steadfast in our support and solidarity with our members at RSUST in their principled struggle against poor governance and maladministration being perpetrated by the Vice-Chancellor and the Governing Council of the University. It has become more evident that the Visitor to RSUST, Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, is brazenly adamant in his refusal to respect the laws establishing the University. The assault and harassment of our members in that University has continued unabated since the because of his determination to stick with the re-appointment of Prof. B. B. Fakae as Vice-Chancellor, after serving an undeserved first term which did not follow due process. The most worrisome dimension is the scandalous involvement of security agents in this show of shame. Today, at RSUST, there is widespread abuse of university statutes and mind-boggling illegalities; unqualified lecturers teach postgraduate courses while examinations conducted without respect for requisite requirements. It is disheartening to observe that the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) has been playing an active role as an accomplice in the desecration of our University system by giving its approval to these despicable acts at RSUST. NUC’s continued disregard for its statutory responsibility as a regulatory agency, with the responsibility of maintaining the highest level of ethical and academic standard in Nigerian universities, as evident in RSUST, creates a grave cause for concern among the membership of our Union. We call on the National Assembly, through its oversight functions, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the role of NUC in the shameless acts of executive obduracy at play in RSUST. Re-engaged University of Ilorin Lecturers You would recall that 49 lecturers of the University of Ilorin were unjustly sacked for participation in a nation-wide strike action of our Union in 2001. Despite the Supreme Court judgment, which re-validated their right to unionize and removed the toga of criminality woven around union activities by Unilorin authorities, their entitlements are still denied them. Three years after the landmark judgment, the University still withholds the salary and allowances of some of the affected staff while their entitlements for sabbatical leave and promotions have not been addressed. We, once again, call on authorities at Unilorin to desist from gagging our members and pitching academics against themselves. A university scholar cannot creatively engage knowledge in an atmosphere of rancor and sponsored bitterness. Neither can they auspiciously fulfill their obligations as agents of change and transformation in their micro community and the wider context of humanity. We shall, therefore, continue to use all legitimate means available to us to protect and defend the interests of academics at the University of Ilorin. The Seemingly Intractable University of Abuja Crisis Gentlemen of the Press, it is becoming crystal clear that the Government is insincere in resolving the crisis at the University of Abuja. As you are possibly aware, the Special Visitation Panel, which looked into the monumental crisis that engulfed the University last year, submitted its report in September 2012. However, the Visitor to the University, President Goodluck Jonathan, has continued to vacillate on what to do with the report of the Panel. Meanwhile, the Uniabuja Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Adelabu, continues to operate like a lord and master whose words are laws! ASUU-NEC calls on the Visitor to Uniabuja to release the White Paper on Special Visitation to Uniabuja without further delay. It is only by doing so and implementing the recommendations of the Visitation Panel that the University can be given a new lease of life that befits a 25-year old university. IMF/World Bank and Nigeria’s Economic Development Gentlemen of the Press, as you are well aware, the Nigerian economy is fraught with contradictions and inconsistencies. Unfortunately, it is glaringly under the jugular clutches of Western economists, experts and interests who promote exogenous (external) instead of endogenous (internal) model of development. This model took a firm root when, in “the early 2005 a group of economists, mainly from the Breton Woods Institutions introduced the concept of Inclusive Growth (IG) to replace the erstwhile notion of Growth and Development (GD).” What is most significant about the IG model is its “attempt to run away from the need to accelerate economic development through deliberate policy interventions so as to move millions of humanity out of poverty”. Having imposed the IG on the country by agents of the World Bank and IMR, it is little surprising that today “economic growth” does not equate to “Nigeria’s development” and prosperity of Nigerians. Key sectors that ought to provide the planks for development and prosperity such as education, power/energy, agriculture and health are in dire state. Government at all levels rather hoists frivolities over the essentials. As recently observed by Prof. Akpan Ekpo, “The implementation of the Transformation Agenda does not preclude the fact that the economy today is characterized by high and rising rate of unemployment particularly among the youths, decayed public school system at all levels, lack of quality public health system, massive corruption, security challenges, among others”. ASUU-NEC rejects externally imposed models of economic growth that discounts human elements in the equation. The Bretton Woods experts can only further under-develop Nigeria and pauperize her citizens. This is because IG “stresses productive employment rather than income redistribution”; implying that the tiny rich Nigerians will continue to get richer while the mass poor will become poorer. A non-insulated economy will only be a subservient economy. The solutions to our problems as a nation must be wholly Nigerian-based, Nigerian-driven and Nigerian-centered. The current reliance on the veiled but obvious drivers of our “envelop economy” being presided over and supervised by agents of the IMF/World Bank will only leave us in a worse state than the IBB era. The current jig-saw dilemma of economic blueprints of NEPAD, Vision 20 2020, Transformational Agenda, etc. are bound to fail in so far as they are not based on any indigenous economic paradigm. 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement You will recall that ASUU declared a total, indefinite and comprehensive strike on 4th December 2011 in order to prevail on government to sincerely and judiciously implement the 2009 Agreement it freely entered into with our Union. Specifically, ASUU identified the following key areas that were yet to be implemented: i. Funding requirements for Revitalization of the Nigerian Universities ii. Federal Government Assistance to State Universities iii. Establishment of NUPEMCO iv. Progressive increase in Annual Budgetary Allocation to Education to 26% between 2009 and 2020 v. Earned Allowances vi. Amendment of the Pension/Retirement Age of Academics on the Professorial cadre from 65 to 70 years vii. Reinstatement of prematurely dissolved Governing Councils viii. Transfer of Federal Government Landed Property to Universities ix. Setting up of Research Development Council and Provision of Research Equipment to laboratories and classrooms in our universities. However, the strike was suspended on 2nd February 2012. As our Union noted then, “NEC decision had been taken in the interest of the revitalization of the Nigerian Universities. To achieve these goals, ASUU expects the government to fulfill its obligation in respect of funding and all other matters contained in its offers.” When the strike was suspended, ASUU drew attention to the fact that the unimplemented agreement was due for renegotiation in June 2012. Following the suspension of the strike, government responded by setting up a Committee via TETFund to assess the needs of Nigerian Universities in terms of infrastructure and required quantum of fund. Government also mandated the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to document and compute the financial implication of implementing the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement. At ASUU’s insistence, many of these conditions have now been met. Yet, the Government has continued to dilly-dally on the implementation. Out of nine items earlier highlighted, only two of the commitment – reinstatement of Governing Councils and the Amendment of Retirement Age Act – were met. For the past 16 months, several steps, including formal and informal consultations, meetings, personal contacts, have been employed to avert resumption of the suspended action. We seem to have now exhausted all available options. Our members cannot understand why a Government finds it difficult to fulfill an Agreement voluntarily entered into with the Union in 2009 as well as the MoU that was introduced following ASUU’s protest against government’s demonstration of bad faith in 2012. Gentlemen of the Press, one key aspect of the Agreement where Government has demonstrated insincerity is on the Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). Components of these allowances include responsibility allowances to Heads of Department, Deans of Faculties and other functionaries of the university system. After the MoU of 26th January 2012, Government accepted in principle to pay EAA. As if to demonstrate its commitment, the IMC under the chairmanship of Dr. Wale Babalakin was assigned the responsibility of working out practical and sustainable ways to do this. When the IMC submitted its recommendations on this aspect of the Agreement, which has run into almost four years, however, the Government suddenly began to give excuses. And, finally, it set aside the recommendations of the IMC on the account of financial difficulties; these were recommendations that came out of serious engagements with officials from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). Our Union sees this sudden reversal of gears as a betrayal of trust. From all indications, it appears Government is yet unprepared to address the challenges facing the Nigerian University System with the urgency that is required. This trend is dangerous, as it constitutes a threat to the relative peace in Nigerian Universities. There can be no justification for Government’s position given what all Nigerians know about the management of the nation’s resources. It is evident that Government is highly deceptive and is not interested in sustaining relative stability in our universities. If Government can betray our Union on the 2009 Agreement, where is the basis of trust for the impending review that was due for 2012? It is in the light of the above, especially having exhausted all other options, that ASUU-NEC at its meeting in Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, between 29th and 30th June 2013 resolved to call out all its members on a nation-wide strike action beginning from Wednesday, 3rd July, 2013. The strike action is comprehensive and total. Our members shall withdraw their services until Government fully implements all the outstanding aspects of the 2009 Agreement, and commences the process of review of the same Agreement. Concluding Remarks Gentlemen of the Press, the time has come to rise in defense of the true liberation of our country. We believe this liberation must begin with education, which is a veritable weapon for socio-economic transformation. The IMF/World Bank and their local collaborators would make Nigerians believe that “basic” or little education is good enough for the children of the poor. It is a ruse. Our Union counts on the renewed support of the media in challenging agents of underdevelopment who deny less-privileged Nigerians quality higher education, health, employment and other life-transforming elements of development. We equally invite labor activists, students, traders, professional groups, civil society organizations and other progressive segments of the public to join our determined efforts to save Nigeria from her captors. Thank you for your kind attention. Nasir F. ISA President 1st July 2013
